McConachie is a newer family neighbourhood in Pilot Sound, northeast Edmonton — established by its structure plan in 2006 and named for Grant McConachie, the bush pilot who pioneered airmail routes across the north. It's bounded by 66 Street to the west, Anthony Henday Drive to the north, 50 Street to the east and 167 Avenue to the south. The housing runs roughly six in ten detached homes, three in ten townhouses and duplexes, and one in ten low-rise apartments — almost all of it built in the last two decades, on streets that are overwhelmingly owner-occupied. It suits families who want a newer northeast home with two K–9 schools in the neighbourhood, the Clareview LRT a short drive south, and a preserved tree stand running through the middle of it all.

My local favorites in McConachie

  • The tree stand. McConachie's structure plan preserved an existing stand of trees that bisects the neighbourhood east to west — trails and mature canopy in a suburb where everything else is new. Homes backing onto it are the neighbourhood's quiet premium.
  • 167 Avenue's everyday services — the commercial sites planned along McConachie's south and west edges mean groceries and services are at the neighbourhood's edge, not a drive across the quadrant.
  • Clareview Town Centre and the LRT, minutes south — the Capital Line's Clareview station, the Clareview Town Centre retail strip and the Clareview Community Recreation Centre are a short drive down 66 Street or 50 Street — McConachie borrows Clareview's mature infrastructure.
  • The Henday on the north edge — Anthony Henday Drive east to Fort Saskatchewan or west across the north side; Manning Drive runs just east for the downtown run.

Insider tips for McConachie

  • McConachie vs. Cy Becker is the northeast's most common cross-shop. Cy Becker (east, still building out) is newer; McConachie is more finished, with both K–9 schools open and operating. Families pick between "finished now" and "brand new" — we compare both on the same tour.
  • The duplexes and townhouses are the entry point. Three in ten McConachie homes are duplex or townhouse product — a way into a 2010s-build school neighbourhood below detached prices.
  • Check the east edge carefully. The 50 Street boundary is a future realignment corridor — confirm what the lot backs onto and what the finished road plan looks like before you write on an east-edge home.
  • New-build competition cuts both ways for sellers. McConachie resales compete with quick-possession homes in Cy Becker and Gorman — price against the builders' current incentives, not just last spring's resales.

Who McConachie suits

  • Families who want newer northeast homes — 2006-and-later builds, both school boards' K–9s in or beside the neighbourhood.
  • First-time buyers — duplex and townhouse entry points inside a detached-home suburb.
  • Commuters — Anthony Henday Drive on the north edge, Manning Drive east, Clareview LRT a short drive south.
  • Move-up buyers — detached homes on newer lots without southwest new-build pricing or GST on resales.
  • Sellers — McConachie's first owners are hitting the 10–15-year mark; the buyers are there, but you're priced against active builders next door — strategy matters.
