Laurel is a 2010s family neighbourhood in The Meadows, southeast Edmonton — one of the seven Meadows neighbourhoods named (per the area's naming theme) for trees and plants native to Alberta. Its plan (adopted 2007) delivered what families actually ask for: Svend Hansen School (K–9) inside the neighbourhood, Laurel Crossing's lake and parks on its west side, the Meadows Community Recreation Centre and Library plus the Meadows Transit Centre in Meadows District Park at its southeast, and the 17 Street retail corridor — RioCan Meadows and the Tamarack centres — at its north end. It suits first-time and move-up families who want newer southeast homes with the big facilities already built.

Checked October 2026 against Edmonton Public Schools (epsb.ca) and Edmonton Catholic Schools (ecsd.net) sources. School boundaries and programs change — confirm designation with the school board before you buy.
Edmonton Public Schools
- Svend Hansen School (K–9) — inside Laurel; serves both Laurel East and Laurel West. Note for buyers: the board has used Weinlos School (Mill Woods) as an overflow school for Laurel East — confirm current enrolment status for your address.

My local favorites in Laurel
- The Meadows Community Recreation Centre and Library (2704 17 Street, opened December 2014) — aquatic centre, fitness centre, gymnasium, two NHL-sized arenas and outdoor fields, with the Meadows Library branch inside. For Laurel families this is the rec centre, full stop.
- Meadows Transit Centre (17 Street at Tamarack Way, park & ride) — including the 500X express to downtown and MacEwan University; the Meadows is one of the few newer districts where transit was built with the neighbourhood, not after it.
- Laurel Crossing's lake and trails — Qualico's development on Laurel's west side opens with a lake at its entrance and threads parks and paths through its streets.
- 17 Street retail: RioCan Meadows and the Tamarack centres — Superstore, Home Depot, Best Buy at RioCan Meadows (Whitemud Drive and 17 Street) and a Walmart-anchored centre across the way; plus the smaller Save-On-Foods centre on 23 Avenue for the daily run.
Insider tips for Laurel
- Laurel East vs. Laurel West matters mainly for school overflow. Both sides designate to Svend Hansen, but Laurel East has an overflow history (Weinlos in Mill Woods). If the K–9 is why you're buying in Laurel, we confirm designation and enrolment status for the specific address.
- Mostly 2010s stock = modern systems, young roofs. Laurel's inspection conversations are different from Mill Woods' — fewer age items, more attention to builder-grade finishes and what's been upgraded since.
- The rec centre is a genuine price factor. Homes at Laurel's southeast, walking distance to Meadows District Park, market differently from the neighbourhood's far west edge — the facility is that heavily used.
- Compare against Mill Woods honestly. Laurel buyers often cross-shop older Mill Woods homes across 34 Street: bigger lots and lower prices there, newer homes and the rec centre here. Both can be right — it depends which list you read first.
Who Laurel suits
- Families — a K–9 inside the neighbourhood and the Meadows rec centre/library at its corner.
- First-time and move-up buyers — 2010s detached, duplex and townhouse product at southeast prices.
- Mill Woods upgraders — newer homes minutes from the district they already know.
- Transit users — Meadows Transit Centre park & ride with a downtown express.
- Sellers — competing with remaining newer product in The Meadows; finished basements and proximity to the District Park are the resale edges.
