St. Albert is the Edmonton region's largest satellite city — a full city in its own right northwest of Edmonton along the Sturgeon River, with established family neighbourhoods, newer suburbs like Erin Ridge and Riverside, one of Alberta's strongest French Immersion offerings across its own two school districts, and a trail system that follows the river through the middle of town. It suits families and downsizers who want a small-city feel, top-tier schools, and a straight commute down St. Albert Trail into Edmonton.

Schools serving St. Albert
School boundaries and programs change — confirm designation with the school board before you buy.
Important local difference: St. Albert does not use Edmonton Public or Edmonton Catholic schools. It has its own districts — St. Albert Public Schools and Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools — and designation is by address inside the city.
St. Albert Public Schools
- French Immersion — K–6: Leo Nickerson Elementary, Lois E. Hole Elementary, Muriel Martin Elementary; Grades 7–9: Hillgrove School (also home to the district's Late French Immersion entry point for Grade 7 students with little or no French); Grades 10–12: Paul Kane High School — French Immersion continues to Grade 12 (board program page: https://www.spschools.org/programs/french-immersion)
- Bellerose Composite High School — the city's second public senior high.
Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools (GSACRD)
- École Secondaire St. Albert Catholic High School (SACHS) — senior high with a full French Immersion stream (French Language Arts, Études Sociales, Mathématiques, Sciences taught in French; SACHS Bilingual Certificate at 40+ French-taught credits). School page: https://sachs.gsacrd.ab.ca/
- École Marie Poburan — Catholic French Immersion elementary.
- Neil M. Ross Catholic School — Catholic elementary (English).
- Sister Alphonse Academy — note for north St. Albert buyers: GSACRD's attendance page states residents north of Erin Ridge Drive and Erin Ridge Road are now designated to Sister Alphonse Academy (board boundaries page: https://www.gsacrd.ab.ca/transportation/attendance-boundaries).
- Richard S. Fowler Catholic Junior High — Catholic junior high.
My local favourites in St. Albert
- St. Albert Grain Elevator Park — my pick for the city's signature spot: the restored 1906 and 1929 grain elevators on Meadowview Drive, a designated historic site and the photo every St. Albert story runs.
- The Red Willow Park trail system along the Sturgeon River — paved trails that stitch the whole city together; for a lot of St. Albert buyers, this is the lifestyle they're purchasing.
- Downtown St. Albert & the Arden Theatre / St. Albert Place — the civic and cultural heart on St. Anne Street, and home ground for the Saturday farmers' market in season.
- Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park (Big Lake) — boardwalks and birdwatching on the city's west edge; a provincial park inside city limits.
- Servus Credit Union Place — the big multi-use recreation centre (arenas, pools, fitness) that anchors family weekends, especially in hockey season.
Insider tips for St. Albert
- Price the commute honestly. St. Albert Trail / Mark Messier Trail is the main artery and Groat Road is the scenic alternative — both load up at peak. Buyers who test the 8 a.m. run to their actual workplace make better neighbourhood picks (Erin Ridge vs. Lacombe Park is a real time difference).
- St. Albert runs its own school boards (see the Schools section) — if you're moving from Edmonton, your child's designated school changes systems entirely. French Immersion families: St. Albert's K–12 immersion pathway in both districts is a genuine draw and a resale factor.
- Older St. Albert stock is a downsizer's market. Established areas like Grandin, Lacombe Park and Mission were built across the 1960s–1990s — long-tenure owners, bigger lots, mature trees. For sellers there, this is estate-and-downsizing country; for buyers, it means mechanical-age homework (furnaces, poly-B checks, sewer lines) on every offer.
- Newer growth is on the edges — Erin Ridge (north) and Riverside (west) carry the new-build supply; know that a "St. Albert" search spans 1960s bungalows and 2024 builds in the same result list.
Who St. Albert suits
- Families prioritizing schools — especially French Immersion — with a small-city feel.
- Downsizers and estate sales — mature neighbourhoods with long-tenure owners (my SRES® practice works here often).
- Relocators who work in north Edmonton or downtown and want a distinct community identity rather than a suburb of the city.
- Move-up buyers trading Edmonton density for lot size and trail access at comparable money.
