Downsizing means moving to something smaller; rightsizing means moving to something that fits your life now — which is sometimes smaller, sometimes the same size with a better layout, and occasionally a different kind of home entirely. Starting with "fit" instead of "smaller" leads Edmonton seniors to better next homes and fewer second moves.
What questions define the right size?
Start with how you actually live. How many bedrooms get used in a year, honestly counted — including guests? Do you need a main-floor primary bedroom and laundry, a hobby space, room for family dinners, or a yard you still enjoy rather than endure? Which maintenance tasks are already being hired out, and which would you happily never do again? The answers draw the floor plan of the right next home more accurately than any square-footage target.
Then place it: staying in your own neighbourhood keeps doctors, friends and routines intact, which is why my Downsizing and Seniors Guide treats location as a fit question, not an afterthought.
What are the realistic next-home options in Edmonton?
Owned condos and bungalow villas trade yard work for condo fees and rules. A smaller freehold home or bungalow keeps full ownership with less house to run. A life lease offers community with a contract you must read carefully, and a retirement residence trades ownership for bundled support. I compare all four models in 55+ housing options in Edmonton — the right answer depends on maintenance, support, flexibility and what you want to happen to the equity in your current home.
As an SRES® specialist, my role is to sequence it calmly — SRES Realtor Edmonton explains the approach, and a free home evaluation of your current home funds the plan with a real number instead of a guess.

When should you start?
Earlier than feels necessary. The families who do this well start the conversation a year or more before the move, sort belongings at a humane pace, and choose the next home before health or a crisis chooses the timeline for them. Rightsizing is a plan; downsizing under pressure is a scramble.
